Cairns is the stepping-off point to a region where reef, rainforest, culture, and wildlife come together. From Mission Beach to Cape Tribulation, experience tropical beaches, islands, waterfalls, and rainforest, creating unique adventures unlike anywhere else. Hear stories with Traditional Owners, see wildlife, and enjoy a food culture shaped by seafood, tropical produce, and regional flavours, alongside the many experiences that invite you to explore further.

Discover the Great Barrier Reef and Tropical Islands
Discover the Great Barrier Reef and Tropical Islands

The Great Barrier Reef is a natural wonder waiting to be explored. Discover colourful coral gardens, tropical fish, turtles and rays beneath the surface.

There’s no single way to experience the reef. Snorkel or dive among the coral, see what lies beneath from a glass-bottom boat or try helmet diving for something different. On the surface, set sail or explore by kayak around Mission Beach and Dunk Island, or take a scenic helicopter flight for sweeping views across the reef and coastline.

Roam Ancient Rainforest
Roam Ancient Rainforest

Step into the ancient landscapes of the Wet Tropics and explore lush rainforest, mountain ranges, waterfalls and rivers. Discover the ancient Daintree Rainforest and the remarkable meeting point of two World Heritage areas, where rainforest meets the Great Barrier Reef at Cape Tribulation and Mission Beach.

The rainforest is home to an extraordinary variety of plants and wildlife, including the iconic southern cassowary and many species found nowhere else. Explore rainforest trails, discover cascading waterfalls, cruise through the Daintree and Mossman Gorge or soar over the Rainforest canopy simply taking in the sights and sounds of this ancient landscape.

Enjoy the Atherton Tablelands, where lush rainforest gives way to rolling farmland and open country, with waterfalls and pockets of rainforest along the way.

Adventures that Excite
Adventures that Excite

Whether you’re chasing adventure or looking to see the region from a new perspective, there’s plenty to experience in Tropical North Queensland. Go rafting over white-water rapids, soar through the treetops or come face-to-face with saltwater crocodiles (safely of course) in experiences designed to get the pulse racing.

For a different view of the tropics, take to the skies in a hot air balloon. Drift above the landscape and enjoy panoramic views of the rolling countryside of the Atherton Tablelands. Or go beneath the surface and uncover the geological history of the tropics. Geological wonders include fossil fields and the world’s largest lava tube system.

If you can’t get your heart racing in TNQ, then you just aren’t trying hard enough.

Wild Encounters
Wild Encounters

Tropical North Queensland is home to an extraordinary variety of wildlife, from colourful birds and unique rainforest species to iconic Australian animals. Across its rainforests, grasslands, wetlands and coastline, the region is a haven for wildlife, with many species found nowhere else in the world.

For a closer encounter with Australia’s wildlife, visit one of the region’s wildlife parks, where you can see kangaroos, koalas, wallabies, reptiles and other Australian wildlife, including Tasmanian devils and dingoes. Saltwater crocodiles are another iconic part of the tropics. Get up close to these ancient reptiles at a wildlife park or take a boat tour through the Daintree, Cairns or Mission Beach to spot them along the waterways.

For something different, join a night-time wildlife tour and explore the rainforest after dark. As the nocturnal wildlife becomes active, guided walks offer the chance to discover animals and insects that are rarely seen during the day.

Stories, Creativity and Connection

Join a bush tucker experience in the rainforest, learn traditional fishing practices or take part in a Welcome to Country to gain a deeper understanding of Country, culture and tradition.

Meet local artists and discover the creative spirit of Tropical North Queensland through galleries, studios and cultural spaces. Hear the stories and ideas behind their work, watch artists at work and explore exhibitions that reflect the region’s diverse cultures, landscapes and experiences.
